| Joy Swanson Ernst, Ph.D., MSW, is an associate professor and the director of the undergraduate social work program at Hood College, Frederick, Maryland, where she teaches courses in social work practice, social policy, and human behavior and the social environment. She received her MSW from Rutgers University in 1984 and her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in 1999. She served as a Graduate Research Assistant and as Research Director for the original Family Connections Project from 1997-2000. Dr. Ernst’s research and scholarly work reflects her interest in the well-being of children and vulnerable, community-dwelling older adults who are at risk for inadequate care or neglect. She is particularly interested in the impact of environmental factors such as housing and neighborhood conditions on well-being. She has published articles on the relationship between neighborhood factors and child maltreatment, child welfare practice in New Zealand, housing and child care adequacy, and geriatric enrichment in social work education. In 2002, Hood College was one of 67 social work programs to receive a Geriatric Enrichment in Social Work Education grant, which called for social work programs to increase curricular content related to aging into foundation courses. In 2006, she received a John A. Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholars award. Currently, she is conducting research on risk and protective factors for caregiver neglect of older adults. |
